Johnston was born and raised in Albemarle NC. In middle school he discovered his uncle's collection of architectural drawings and a career was born. He attended UNC-Charlotte's College of Architecture and was selected for the inaugural Belgium study abroad program. Johnston began his career in 2003 with Michael Ross Kersting Architecture in Wilmington NC. He moved to Raleigh and worked with Tonic Design from 2005, serving as project manager for the award-winning Walters Residence, recognized as the first LEED certified modern home in NC. In 2010, he worked with Clearscapes and in 2012 he co-founded The Raleigh Architecture Company and The Raleigh Construction Company with Craig Kerins.
(1979– )
Kerins grew up in Pennsylvania and Germany and attended high school in Greenville NC. He received a BA in Architecture from UNC-Charlotte in 2004. Kerins relocated to Austin TX and worked for Hurt Partners Architects doing residential design. After this, he transitioned to design/build working with Jay Hargrave Architecture (formerly Cottam Hargrave) including the 5th Street, Clear Link, Kennan, Kinney, and West Lake residences. Upon returning to North Carolina in 2012, Kerins obtained his General Contractors license and co-founded The Raleigh Architecture Company and The Raleigh Construction Company with Robby Johnston.
