Pillsworth grew up in Winston-Salem NC, graduating from RJ Reynolds HS in 1983. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in architecture in 1988. He interned with Newman and Jones in Winston-Salem, where he worked after graduation for several years. He went out on his own in 1994.
