Kempel was born in Minneola NY, graduating in 1989 from Jordan HS in Durham NC. He graduated in 1994 from NC State with a BEDA in Architecture. He worked at O'Brien Atkins for a few years, then graduated from UCLA with a Masters in Architecture in 1999. He then worked for Rockefeller Hricak Architects. They split, and Kempel and Rockefeller started Rockefeller Kempel 2003-2024. He formed his own firm in 2024.
