SOLD OUT!

NCModernist celebrates 2023 with a special night in one of North Carolina's most-awarded Modernist houses as we honor one of North Carolina's most-celebrated architects, Frank Harmon, with lively music, delicious food, and curated drinks!  Proceeds benefit NCModernist's mission of documenting, preserving, and promoting residential Modernist architecture across the state.

You'll discover the Smart/Stell House in Parkwood, the original 1960's development to support Research Triangle Park.  The house -- designed by Vinny Petrarca of Katherine Hogan Architects -- won design awards including AIA Triangle, AIA North Carolina, and the Matsumoto Prize.  The house has been featured in video productions for First Citizens Bank, the rapper Lawsy, WRAL, and UNC-TV.

At the event, you'll meet one of North Carolina's most celebrated architects, Frank Harmon FAIA, our guest of honor.  Born in Georgia and raised in Greensboro NC, Frank attended the NCSU School of Design from 1959 to 1961. He interned with Edward Loewenstein 1963-1964 and then moved to London to study at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, graduating in 1967. Harmon started to practice architecture in 1968 with McMinn, Norfleet & Wicker of Greensboro; moved to New York to work with Richard Meier for three years; was a principal in the firm of Harmon & Simeloff RIBA in London until 1979; then started his own firm in Raleigh in 1981. Harmon taught at the NCSU School of Design for 20+ years as a Professor of Practice. He was very close to Harwell Hamilton Harris and was executor of his estate. Harmon was on the cover of Residential Architect in 2002 and received the Kamphoefner Prize, the Tower Award, the F. Carter Williams Gold Medal, the COTE Award, the NCSU Design Foundation, the Brick Honor award from AIA North Carolina, and dozens of AIA design awards.  In early 2008, he won a national design competition for the AIA NC Center for Architecture and Design which was completed in 2011.  See all his residential work.
